Start with tooth colour and oral health, then discuss whitening options, expectations and sensitivity.
What can whitening change?
Whitening lightens natural teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings do not lighten in the same way, so discuss how visible restorations may look afterwards. Tell your dentist when you first noticed the colour change and what you hope to achieve, rather than choosing a shade without considering the rest of your smile.
An examination before a product
Teeth and gums should be checked before whitening, particularly when there is sensitivity, discomfort or older dental work. Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding and any products that have caused irritation. Suitability comes first. Do not copy a concentration or exposure time from another person’s experience or an online demonstration.
How to compare options
Your clinician may discuss in-practice whitening or supervised home trays, depending on your needs and availability. Ask how the material is used, how the gums are protected and which symptoms mean you should stop and call. A label such as “laser” alone does not establish suitability or predict how many shades your teeth will change.
Sensitivity and realistic expectations
Temporary sensitivity or gum irritation can occur. Report troublesome symptoms and follow your individual instructions rather than extending exposure to the whitening material. The effect is not permanent, so discuss maintenance without repeatedly treating your teeth on your own. Ask for advice if differences between natural teeth and restorations remain noticeable.
Before arranging a visit
Ask whether cleaning or another dental issue needs attention first, and whether the price includes the examination, trays, material and review visits. Mention an upcoming event so you can discuss timing without assuming a guaranteed result. The veneers page explains the distinction between altering colour and shape, but an examination is needed to choose an appropriate option.
