Discuss restoring teeth and replacing missing ones with attention to tooth structure, bite and everyday care.
How do crowns and bridges differ?
A crown covers a tooth that needs restoration. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth and relies on supporting structures. Choosing between approaches requires an assessment of the teeth, surrounding tissues and bite. Begin by clarifying whether the task is to restore an existing tooth, replace a gap or address a problem first.
Which options should you discuss?
Some teeth may suit a more conservative restoration, while others need broader coverage. Ask how much tooth preparation is proposed and why a crown is recommended. For a missing tooth, discuss implants or removable options as well. Compare choices for your situation, especially when neighbouring teeth are sound or already have restorations.
Material, shade and bite
Ask why a material is suggested for the tooth’s position, chewing needs and appearance. Discuss shape, shade and the limits of matching natural teeth. At the fitting appointment, explain any high bite or uncomfortable pressure. Do not assume that discomfort must be tolerated without asking the dentist to assess it.
From preparation to fitting
An impression or other suitable measurement method may be used, and a temporary restoration may be needed while the final one is prepared. Ask about the planned stages, temporary care and what to do if it comes loose. If the tooth has previously had root canal treatment, bring the relevant information and discuss its assessment before a crown.
Care, costs and review
Request instructions for cleaning margins and beneath a bridge where relevant, together with appropriate follow-up. Clarify whether the price includes preparation, a temporary restoration, the final restoration and reviews, and how adjustments or repairs are handled. A crown does not end the need for tooth and gum care. No single material can be assumed best for every patient or tooth.
